- “Why Bismarck NORTH DAKOTA!??”(All inclusive of the wide eyed expression, gaping jaw or skeptical frown.) That is the very first question most people have asked me since I arrived in January 2008. It is a good question considering Africa is much sunnier the majority of the time. Well like most 20year old college kids, I am following my thrill for adventure, trying to get out from under my parents and be independent. According to my family, I’ve always been a free-spirited nomadic type or ADHD because I can’t sit still. My main reason would be that I am here for school, but that’s the generic answer so I left it for last.
My name is Tanya Tambo and I am an International Student from Zimbabwe (which by the way is a separate country from South Africa) I’m a Freshman Majoring in Communications and have a double Minor in Theatre and Music. In addition to being Chair of the International club and an RA in an all girls hall. But enough about me, what does this have to do with you? Well, I am really big on people broadening their minds because there is so much more out there than just your comfort zone. So over the next few weeks in a series of about 7blogs, I want to encourage you as a college student wherever you are, to try either a full term or short term study abroad programme. This is not going to be a platform to soapbox. It’s really a sounding board for ideas.
I think this is an excellent idea for a number of reasons
1. There is more to school than just text books and classes. There are Life Lessons to be learnt. They are the ones that will stay when everything else fades.
2. You will get first hand experience that no Cosmo or Travel Magazine can give you
3. We have the time, energy and craziness to do this so we might as well. What else is Youth good for?
I hope you will enjoy this trip with me. So feel free to give your opinions and ask all the questions you like. Here we go!

I'm extremely interested in studying abroad, and I am currently looking into studying in Ireland for the summer. What program did you go through to study in the United States? Do you have any tips for a first-timer? Any specific things I should be aware of? I probably will be hounding you about this until April, which is the deadline for the summer study abroad program, so get ready!
